BEEF is thrilled to announce the second programme in our 10-year anniversary celebrations: a Double Bill of Slovenian Experimental Cinema, presented in partnership with Cinema Rediscovered at Watershed Cinema. These two screenings are part of the festival’s Reframing Film strand.
This special event includes the UK premiere of the feature documentary Alpe-Adria Underground! directed by Matevž Jerman and Jurij Meden, alongside a curated selection of recently restored experimental films from Slovenia’s avant-garde movement, courtesy of the Slovenian Cinematheque and curated by Matevž Jerman.

Alpe-Edria Underground!
Dir: Matevž Jerman and Jurij Meden, Slovenia, 98 mins, Slovenian with English Subtitles
Between 2013 and 2023, Slovenian Cinematheque preserved and digitized 179 short films created on a tiny stretch of land between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea in the period of socialism (1945-1991), but mostly outside the prevailing state production. Today, we belatedly recognize these films as experimental and as an important, innovative part of the Slovenian film heritage, visible again for the first time after decades. The production of Alpe-Adria Underground! has radically accelerated efforts to preserve, digitize and restore this segment of Slovenian cinema.

Everything Spins: Experimental Film in the Socialist Republic of Slovenia, 1960s–1980s
The program of short experimental films showcases the diversity of artistic approaches and authors from the vibrant experimental scene that simmered in the underground of the Socialist Republic of Slovenia during the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. At the time, filmmakers created under the umbrella of so-called kino clubs and within the framework of amateur film. Over time, much of this work faded into obscurity, and only today are we truly beginning to rediscover this history.
The films in the program are part of avant-garde collections from the archives of the Slovenian Cinematheque and have recently been digitally restored.
The films in the screening include:
Prague Spring (Vinko Rozman, 1969, 11′)
Nokturno (Vasko Pregelj, 1965, 12′)
Fried Brains of Pupilija Ferkeverk (Karpo Godina, 1970, 12′)
Everything Is Spinnning (Davorin Marc, 1978, 2′)
Love At First Sight (Tone Rački, 1972, 3′)
Dislocated Third Eye Series – Bismillah (Sulejman Ferenčak / OM Production, 1984, 31′)
This programme is made possible with the generous support of the Arts Council, Cinema Rediscovered Festival, and Watershed Cinema.
